Situation: The Threat is REAL.
The current data security landscape is terrifying. Cyber attacks are increasing in frequency and some with devastating results. Ransomware is a primary driver for security-centric programming. Cyber Insurance policies are requiring customers to ‘improve’ their security posture. Clients are requiring firms to answer data security audits before hiring. There is a lot of ‘buzz’ about the sensitivity and security of data.
In general, you should back up any work or data that cannot be replaced easily. Patch management is the process of distributing and applying updates to software, hardware and firmware. It is important to constantly update the antivirus software on a computer because computers are regularly threatened by new viruses. An advanced cybersecurity program that is flexible and smart enough to anticipate today’s increasingly sophisticated threats is also needed.
Big Picture Action Items.
A business continuity plan (BCP) is a document that outlines how a business will continue operating during an unplanned disruption in service. Business continuity plans should also define Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs). These metrics are the time to recover to a pre-established level of service and may not cover recovery to full operation. A disaster recovery (DR) plan is a formal document created by an organization that contains detailed instructions on how to respond to unplanned incidents such as power outages, cyber-attacks, and any other disruptive events. Changing the view from ‘are you backing up your data’ to ‘how long will it take me to recover’ is a big step. Backup and recovery can be the first steps into IT resiliency and moving into a business continuity model. Cyber Insurance and other technical solutions (such as 2FA) can help solidify you firm’s plan for securing your clients’ data and moving into the future.
